Case study: Global bank looking for alternatives to satellite antenna installation

A tier 1 investment bank is seeking a GPS timing alternative for trading, investment, cryptocurrencies and more. This would be done through a smarter data centre design which is made for maximum uptime and precise time synchronisation.

Client

This major international bank has a significant global presence across several hyper-scale data centres and serves more than 20 million customers across its retail, corporate and investment banking arms.

Problem

The bank was launching additional services and needed to increase data centre capacity in two new locations, but was limited by the data centre components available.

Traditional accurate time synchronisation requires an augmentation to data centre architecture by adding a series of additional grandmasters and rooftop antennae to receive a satellite signal at significant capital expense.as well as additional operational expense.

However, the new data centres had no capacity to add satellite antenna onto the roof, due to a combination of lack of space and building permission. This meant traditional, accurate time synchronisation, via satellite antenna, was not an option.

Solution

Our team has developed a range of software-based timing solutions to deliver precise, scientifically measured, and accurate time synchronisation with trusted timestamps.

With the highest levels of accuracy, and cutting-edge adaptive control capability, this new technology has a range of applications including data collection, compliance and security for global financial markets.

We worked with the client to understand their infrastructure requirements and put together a bespoke proposal for providing accurate time synchronisation into their data centres. Hoptroff Traceable Time as a Service (TTaaS®) delivers precision time protocol over a network and, therefore, does not require changes to the data centre design by installing satellite antennae.

Outcome

No incremental timing hardware or changes to data centre architecture (no grandmaster clocks or satellite timing antenna).

Time feed includes both satellite and terrestrial time sources for added resilience.

No ongoing maintenance or monitoring as we maintain the clocks and time feeds on the clients behalf.

Installed and fully operational within 10 working days from contract signature.

Fully traceable and MiFID II compliant timestamps.

We can scale quickly to cover additional expansion and integrate with data centre operations as and when required.
